Objective

To understand the concept of place value- number and its expanded form.

Supplies

You will need the following items. I have also recommended few options below. It is good to have these materials handy if you plan to make multiple projects for your kids.

• Thick cardstock papers of 3 different colors
• Binder ring
• A pair of scissors
• Marker
• A hole punch

Demonstration

1. Cut 10 1 inch x 2 inch squares from one color of a card stock paper. Use these cuttings to demonstrate ones place. Write numbers 0, 1, 2, …, 9 on these squares.
2. Cut 10 1 inch x 3 inch rectangles from another color of a card stock paper. Use these cuttings for tens place. Write numbers 00, 10, 20, …, 90 on these squares. Write these numbers such that the last digit (0) of these numbers will be hidden under the ones place. Check the image below.
3. Cut 10 1 inch x 4 inch rectangles from the third color of a card stock paper. Use these cuttings to demonstrate hundreds place. Write numbers 000, 100, 200, …, 900 on these squares. Ensure that the last two digits (00) of these numbers will be hidden under the tens and ones places. Check the images below.
4. Punch hole on each of these pieces and put those together with a binder ring.
5. Record the observations in the table to visualize expanded forms of numbers.
