Let’s create a fun math puzzle! This is a favorite of my little one, who loves to challenge himself with math problems. We call it “break the code” puzzle, and it’s incredibly easy to make. In fact, you can put it together in just under 10 minutes.
Material Required
- Thick card stock papers in 4 different colors
- Scissors
- Brad pin
- Marker or a pen
Directions
First, create four circles of increasing diameter. I recommend using thick cardstock papers in different colors for durability. I made circles measuring 2, 4, 6, and 8 inches in diameter. These papers are sturdy and not easily bent.

Now, assemble the circles by fastening them at the center with the Brad pin. This will keep the pieces secure while allowing each wheel to turn smoothly.

Next, divide the circles into 12 equal parts, and draw lines through the center. So, let’s briefly take the wheels apart. Using a protractor, mark 30-degree angles around the radius of each circle. Once you’ve done that, reassemble the circles and draw lines to create 12 equal sections.

Now, it’s time to write numbers on each circle. Starting with the outer circle, write the numbers in the following order. And voila! Your puzzle is ready to be solved.

Hand it over to your child and ask him/her to arrange the wheels in a way that each column of numbers adds up to 20. This will help with critical thinking and addition practice.
I’ll show you one solution here, but feel free to come up with your own combinations. Remember, you can use any numbers you like to create your own “break the code”. It’s all about having fun and challenging your little one’s math skills.
If you want to take it a step further, you can even give your kids an empty template and let them fill in the numbers to create their own unique puzzles. They can then share and solve them with their friends for even more fun. You can find a printable template for this puzzle below. I hope your kids enjoy this engaging math activity!
