Let’s learn place value and what does it mean. This activity, when used in conjunction with Place Value Flip Book builds a great understanding of place value and face value of digits in a number.
Material required
White paper, pencils, scissors
Directions
- Use the template given below to cut out rectangular strips of equal size.
Fig. 1 - Fold each strip to create four sections to represent thousands, hundreds, tens and ones (Fig. 2).

Demonstration
- Take a four digit number. Write an expanded form, for example 5000 + 300 + 10 + 7, in the four sections of the template.
- Fold the strip such that 0s are not visible.
- The number formed is 5317.
- Print the this activity to practice writing a number from its expanded form and vice-versa.
