An Agamograph is a type of kinetic art form, first implemented by an Israeli artist Yaacov Agam. Kinetic arts, as the name indicate, require movement- either the viewer needs to move or the object needs to be moved for the full effect. This is a unique art form made with interlaced images that creates optical illusions making an image transition from one to another. Let’s create our own!
Materials required
You will need,
- Printed copy of template Agamograph1 on an A4 size paper
- Printed copy of template Agamograph2 on an A4 size paper
- glue stick and a pair of scissors
- coloring materials like crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
Directions
- Make two different drawings on template Agamograph1. As you can see, the images on drawing 1 and 2 are marked as A1 – A8 and B1 – B8 respectively. This will be used in coming steps to create the lenticular views.
- Try to choose two drawings that connect in some way. This will enhance the visual effects of the final art. For example, I decided to make a new year card.

- Once your drawings are done, use template Agamograph2 for the next step.

- Cut the first strip from drawing #1 and glue it down on template 2. Next, cut the first strip from drawing #2 and glue it next to the first strip. Continue pasting segments from both drawings alternately until all strips are cut and glued. It may look strange now, but just wait!
- Carefully fold the paper accordion-style. Spread out the folds slightly until the spacing is right.
- Now, turn your art piece at an angle and look at it from the side. You should see one whole drawing! Now look at it from the other side and you should see your other drawing. Two drawings in one!
