What Are Tangrams?
Tangrams are an ancient puzzle consisting of seven flat pieces (called tans) that can be arranged to form various shapes. The goal is to rearrange these seven pieces into a specific shape or figure without overlapping any of the pieces. The shapes range from animals, people, and objects, to geometric patterns. Despite their simple nature, tangrams are a great way to challenge your mind and develop your spatial reasoning skills.

Puzzle 1: Creating the Tangram Square
To begin, you will need to cut out the seven pieces of the tangram puzzle. These pieces are formed from a square that’s been cut into:
- 2 large triangles
- 1 medium triangle
- 2 small triangles
- 1 square
- 1 parallelogram
Now, arrange these seven pieces back together to form a perfect square. You’ll notice that all the pieces fit together neatly to recreate the original shape. This is the classic tangram starting position and the foundation for solving all other tangram challenges.

Puzzle 2: Can You Make a Heart?
Ready for a creative challenge?
Using all seven tangram pieces, try to arrange them to form a heart shape ❤️.
Rules to follow:
- All seven pieces must be used
- Pieces may be rotated or flipped
- No overlapping is allowed
- The final shape should clearly resemble a heart
This puzzle encourages you to think beyond straight edges and right angles. You’ll discover that even angular shapes can come together to create smooth, curved-looking forms when arranged thoughtfully.

Why Tangrams Are So Great for Learning
Tangrams are more than just puzzles—they’re powerful learning tools:
- Creativity: There are thousands of possible figures to create
- Critical Thinking: Solvers must plan, test, and revise their ideas
- Math Readiness: Builds early understanding of geometry and spatial reasoning
- Fine Motor Skills: Precise placement strengthens coordination
They’re ideal for classrooms, math clubs, family game nights, or quiet solo challenges.
