Have you ever had a pile of small cubes lying around and wondered what to do with them? We had a whole bunch of 1 cm cubes, and instead of letting them sit in a box, we decided to glue them together into one of the coolest puzzles ever created—the Soma Cube! It’s fun to make, super challenging to solve, and a perfect family brain workout.
What is a Soma Cube?
The Soma Cube is a 3D puzzle invented in 1933 by Danish scientist Piet Hein during a lecture on quantum mechanics (how cool is that?). It’s made of 7 puzzle pieces, each built from 3 or 4 little cubes glued together. These pieces, referred to as “trominoes” and “tetrominoes,” represent essential shapes in mathematics and are frequently utilized in tiling and puzzle-solving.
The challenge? Put all the pieces together to form a perfect 3 × 3 × 3 cube.
Sounds simple, right? Not at all! There are 240 different solutions, so you’ll never run out of ways to play.
Materials You’ll Need
- 27 small cubes (I used 1 cm cubes)
- White glue or wood glue
- A flat surface for drying
- Optional: paint or markers to color each piece (makes it easier to recognize them)
Directions – Making Your Soma Cube
You’ll be making 7 unique pieces. Each piece is formed by gluing together 3 or 4 cubes. Here’s how:

- The “L” Piece – Glue 3 cubes in a row, then add 1 cube on top of the end to make an L shape.
- The “T” Piece – Glue 3 cubes in a line, then stick 1 cube in the middle of the row to make a T.
- The “Z” Piece – Glue 2 cubes in a row, then glue 2 more cubes on top but shifted over, like stairs.
- The “L Small” Piece – Just 3 cubes in an L shape.
- The “P” Piece – 3 cubes forming a right angle corner, with a 4th cube stacked on top of the corner.
- The “A” Piece – A piece with a single cube on top of a side of the “Z” piece, creating a chiral (mirror-image) left-handed shape.
- The “B” Piece – The mirror image of the “A” piece, a right-handed shape.
Once all pieces are glued, let them dry completely. If you want, paint each piece a different color—this makes building and solving easier (and they look amazing!).
How to Play
- Mix up the 7 pieces.
- Try to fit them back into a 3 × 3 × 3 cube.
- Once you solve the cube, try building new shapes: a staircase, a sofa, a snake, or even your own creative designs.

Pro tip: Time yourself or challenge a friend—it’s way harder than it looks!
Why is This Puzzle Awesome?
- Brain workout – It improves spatial thinking, problem-solving, and patience.
- Creative play – You can invent endless new shapes.
- Family fun – Great as a group challenge or a quiet solo activity.
Fun fact: The name “Soma” was inspired by Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World, where “soma” was a drug meant to keep people happy. Piet Hein thought his puzzle was a happier, healthier kind of “soma.”
Wrap-Up
If you’ve got spare cubes, don’t let them go to waste—turn them into your very own Soma Cube puzzle. It’s a project that’s quick to build, fun to play, and challenging enough to keep you hooked for hours. Plus, you’ll have a handmade brain teaser you can proudly show off.
Hope you enjoy making it as much as I did—happy puzzling!
